Motor Torque

Definition

The rotational force produced by a motor shaft, calculated as T = P/ω where P is power and ω is angular velocity. Measured in N·m or lb·ft. Determines acceleration capability and load driving ability.

Practical Note

Starting torque (150-200% of rated) must exceed load breakaway torque. For variable speed drives, torque may be constant (fans) or vary inversely with speed (constant power loads).
