Engineering Strain
Definition
The change in length divided by the original length: ε = ΔL/L₀. Also called nominal strain, it is dimensionless but often expressed as a percentage or in microstrain (με).
Practical Note
Elastic strain is typically < 0.5% for metals. 0.2% offset strain is commonly used to define yield strength. 1000 με = 0.1% = 0.001 strain.
