Allowable Weld Stress
Definition
The maximum stress permitted in a weld, determined by electrode strength and safety factors. Per AWS D1.1, fillet weld allowable shear = 0.30 × electrode tensile strength (Fexx).
Practical Note
E70xx electrodes (70 ksi) give allowable shear of 21 ksi. For fatigue loading, reduce allowable stress based on joint category and stress range.
