Power Dissipation

Definition

The rate at which electrical energy is converted to heat in a circuit, measured in watts (W). Calculated as P = V × I, P = I²R, or P = V²/R. Power dissipation determines thermal management requirements.

Practical Note

Resistors are rated by power handling (¼W, ½W, 1W, etc.). Exceeding ratings causes overheating and failure. Power loss in wires (I²R losses) increases with the square of current.
